The first free-standing museum in the South dedicated to African American fine art, founded in 1988 in Atlanta's historic West End neighborhood. Housed in an 1857 Victorian home — the former residence of Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds, a prominent physician and art patron. Permanent collection of 450+ works by Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, Robert S. Duncanson (oldest known painting), Hale Woodruff, and Benny Andrews. The only fine arts museum in metro Atlanta specializing in arts of the African Diaspora. Offers exhibitions, artist talks, workshops, concerts, poetry readings, and film festivals.
